Navigating Bellevue College Summer Quarter Registration

Enrolling in classes at Bellevue College (BC) is a straightforward process, and this article provides a comprehensive guide to help students navigate the registration process, particularly for the summer quarter. Whether you are a new, returning, or continuing student, understanding the timelines, procedures, and important deadlines is crucial for a smooth enrollment experience.

Getting Started

Account Activation and Enrollment Dates

If you are a first-time user, the initial step involves activating your account. Once activated, you can find your specific enrollment date by clicking on "Enrollment Dates" located on the menu. Continuing students can enroll anytime on or after their assigned enrollment appointment time.

Application Process for New and Returning Students

New students, or returning students who haven't attended classes for at least two years, need to submit a new application. If the gap is less than two years but more than four quarters, a Term Activation request suffices. Students returning after four or more quarters enroll during the open enrollment period.

When completing the application, it’s vital to select the correct option under "I will be enrolling as a…":

  • First Year: Choose this if you're attending college for the first time.
  • Reapplying: Select this if you've attended Bellevue College previously.
  • Transfer: If you've earned credits at another college and plan to transfer them to Bellevue College.
  • Running Start: This option may not apply to all students.

When selecting "Program" under "Start A New Application", consider the following options:

  • Academic: For those planning to earn a two-year degree, transfer to a university, or complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree.
  • Baccalaureate: For those pursuing a Bachelor’s degree offered at Bellevue College.
  • Non-Award Seeking: Ideal for students taking courses without a specific degree or certificate in mind, often to transfer credits back to another institution.
  • Professional Technical: For students seeking a credential, degree, or certificate focused on specific career training.
  • Transitional Studies: For adults pursuing GED, Basic Education, or ESL (English as a Second Language) programs.

Key Dates and Deadlines

Bellevue College has specific dates and deadlines that students should be aware of to successfully register for classes. These dates vary depending on whether you are a current, returning, or new student.

Important Dates to Remember

Pay attention to the application deadlines, which are posted on the academic calendar. Since processing your application can take a few days, the recommended last date to apply is also posted on the academic calendar.

  • Current/Continuing Students: Online registration begins based on assigned registration access time.
  • New/Returning (former) Students: Online registration begins (open registration, no “registration time” or appointment required).

Specific Deadlines:

  • Last day to register online without instructor permission: For classes with space available and no waitlist.
  • Registration begins using online Instructor Permission Process
  • Last day to register with instructor permission
  • Last day to change a credit class to audit
  • Last day to drop a class online without a “W” grade on transcript
  • “W” will appear on transcript
  • Grades posted to transcript
  • Tuition due dates: Be mindful of tuition due dates, which are posted on the Academic Calendar. Each time that you enroll in a class (or are enrolled into a class from a waitlist), you will incur a balance on your account.

Financial Aid and Tuition

Financial aid is a crucial aspect of college enrollment for many students. To maximize your chances of receiving aid, start the application process as early as possible. The priority deadline for completion is often several months prior to the start of the quarter. Missing the deadline means you might need to self-pay for tuition and fees first, then have financial aid reimburse you for any eligible funds later.

  • Begin tuition payment for awarded students
  • Begin disbursement of refunds
  • Petition/Appeal deadline for aid canceled due to fall grades
  • Date for Final adjustment to Pell grant based on enrollment level

Understanding Residency for Tuition Purposes

The "Resident/Non-Resident" title refers to your residency for tuition purposes, determined by your responses in the online admissions application. If your tuition shows "Resident," you are considered a Washington State resident and will pay the in-state tuition rate. If it shows "Non-Resident," you are considered an out-of-state resident.

Navigating the Registration Process

Class Search and Enrollment

Using the Class Search, you will find the “Status” with a green “O” for open to enroll. There will be two numbers separated by a “/” slash. The first number on the left of the slash “/” is the number of seats available in the course. The second number on the right side of the slash “/” is the number of total seats in the course.

Permission Numbers

The permission number box always appears in case a student needs to use a permission number* to complete their enrollment in a class. If you are not using a permission number, click Continue to proceed with your enrollment. *Permission numbers are used to override enrollment situations - closed class, prerequisites not being met, instructor permission required, or late registration. Students request permission numbers from instructors.

Waitlists

If a class is full, you may have the option to join a waitlist. Keep an eye on your Bellevue College email and your ctcLink account, as you will be notified if a spot opens up.

Swapping Classes

Dropping a class using Swap, will still follow the tuition refund deadlines as indicated on the Academic Calendar. For example: You are enrolled in Class A which is 5 credits and has a total cost of $100. You decide to switch Class A for Class B which is also 5 credits but has a total cost of $150. You use the Swap Classes feature to switch from Class A to Class B during the 50% refund period. Dropping Class A results in a $50 credit on your account (50% refund on the drop). Enrolling in Class B results in a $150 charge (full cost of Class B).

Dynamic Dated Classes

To view late start classes that are available go to Class search, select the correct term/quarter, then select “More filters”. Select “session” and then “Dynamic Dated”.

Important Considerations for Transfer Students

It is extremely common, especially over the summer quarter, for students to take classes at BC in order to transfer them back to their main university/college (home institution). Make sure to select non-award seeking as your program on the admissions application. You will complete the application process and once you set up your netID, you may need to provide your unofficial transcript or take placement testing to get your account coded to reflect that you meet the required pre-requisites for the course(s) you want to take.

If you are not sure if the class you are taking here at BC will transfer to your home institution, you will need to check with your home institution’s course equivalency guide or your home institution’s academic advisors. Once you complete the class, you can order an official transcript be sent to your home institution so they can accept the college credit for the course.

Testing Services

Testing Services maintains a separate calendar with dates and times for specific tests or services.

Canvas and Communication

Double Checking Tuition Charges

Double check that you are being charged the correct amount by reviewing Bellevue College’s tuition rates and fee descriptions. If your initial Bellevue College application had inconsistencies with residency for tuition purposes (which determines whether you pay “in-state” or “out-of-state” tuition rates), you might not have noticed while you were in the Running Start program, since your tuition was mostly covered. Once you have left Running Start, you might have a higher tuition rate if your residency status is not correct.
