Navigating Ball State University: A Comprehensive Guide to Campus Maps and Parking

Ball State University, like any large institution, can be challenging to navigate for new students, visitors, and even long-time faculty and staff. Understanding the campus layout and parking options is crucial for a smooth and stress-free experience. This article provides a detailed overview of the resources available to help you navigate Ball State University, including campus maps and parking information.

Digital Campus Maps: Your Guide in the Palm of Your Hand

The digital age has revolutionized how we find our way around, and Ball State University is no exception. An official app for campus maps is available, offering a user-friendly and interactive way to explore the campus. This app, designed "by a student, for students," is a valuable tool for anyone needing assistance with navigation.

Features of the Official Campus Map App

While specific details of the Ball State University's official app are not provided, examining similar university apps reveals common features:

  • Detailed Building Information: Individually labeled buildings with room numbers and department listings.
  • Search Functionality: Ability to search for specific buildings, departments, or landmarks.
  • Real-time Updates: Updated information on construction, closures, and other important campus events.
  • Accessibility Features: Considerations for users with disabilities, such as accessible routes and building entrances.

App Availability and Cost

The official campus map app is available for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Vision) and requires iOS 15.6 or later, or visionOS 1.0 or later. While the app itself may be free to download, it often includes in-app purchases for additional features or content. The "All Access Pass" is a weekly subscription.

Printed Campus Maps: A Traditional Approach

For those who prefer a tangible map, free campus maps are available at the Office of Parking Services in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. These maps are a valuable resource for visitors and new students who may not have immediate access to the digital map or prefer a physical copy for easier reference.

Parking at Ball State University: A Comprehensive Guide

Navigating parking regulations and options is essential for anyone driving to Ball State University. The university offers various parking options, each with specific rules and regulations.

Visitor Parking

Visitors to Ball State University have several parking options:

  • Permit Lots: The general public and any visitors not affiliated with Ball State University who are on campus during regular business hours may purchase a $5 pass to park in yellow or green permit lots.
  • Hourly Parking Garages: Hourly parking is available in each garage. You must pay at the beginning of your stay in the parking garage. The pay stations in each parking garage provide instructions for making a payment. Overnight parking is prohibited in all parking garages.
  • Surface Lots: Surface lots are parking lots located outside of or close to highly trafficked buildings.

Parking Payment Options

Ball State University offers multiple ways to pay for parking:

  • Pay Stations: Pay stations are kiosks designed to provide short- and long-term parking options. They require users to enter their correct license plate from the back of the car they are driving to pay for parking. These machines will accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) or cash & coins for payment. Depending on the location of the machine, there are different options for the amount of time that may be purchased. Pay stations do not give change.
  • Parking Meters: Parking meters are standalone devices located in surface parking lots across the campus. Meters are located in the lots connected to all residence halls as well as lots connected to highly visited administrative buildings. Users do not enter their license plates on these machines, rather they pay per the space they are parked in. The majority of stand-alone parking meters are dual space meters. This means that one meter will govern two different parking spaces. When parking at a dual space meter, the users will find the meter either in the center line of two parking spaces or, for parallel parking areas, at the front end of their car or the tail end of their car. (Rule of thumb in a parallel area, if you do not see a meter in front of your car, look to the back). A small number of spaces are governed by single space meters. In this case, the meter will always be at the front of the car directly in between the lines of the space. Both dual and single space meters accept the same forms of payment. They are coins and credit cards (Discover, Mastercard, Visa). Cash is not accepted on these machines. Min/Max is 1hr.

Important Parking Rules and Regulations

  • Overnight Parking: Overnight parking is prohibited in all parking garages.
  • License Plate Requirement: Pay stations require users to enter their correct license plate from the back of the car they are driving to pay for parking.
