Introduction to Balanced Body Education

In the ever-evolving world of Pilates and movement education, Balanced Body Education has emerged as a leading force. Balanced Body Education is celebrating 20 years in 2026. Balanced Body Education is committed to providing the educational tools to help students teach and grow as practitioners. Balanced Body Education encourages each student to find their voice, their rhythm and their style as practitioners.

Core Curriculum: Movement Principles and Reformer Training

The Balanced Body Education program is built upon a modular course structure. Courses are most often offered on weekends or shorter segments, to accommodate those with busy schedules. The curriculum is designed to create an educational arc of learning that is digestible and easily integrated into practice.

Movement Principles: The Foundation

Movement Principles is the gateway course and is highly recommended as the starting place for coursework. The Movement Principles course explores the essence of Pilates and successful Pilates teaching by delving deeply into the pre-Pilates skill-based movements that feed all Pilates exercises. The new course explores the essence of Pilates and successful Pilates teaching by delving deeply into the pre-Pilates skill-based movements that feed all Pilates exercises.

This experiential course introduces the essential building blocks of the Pilates methodology. Instructors gain awareness of their own movement patterns and biases and learn how to train movement to optimize the body in motion. This sets the stage for successful Pilates classes and sessions. It is the first course in all of the Balanced Body® Instructor certifications that are offered (Mat, Reformer, Comprehensive). This course is the prerequisite for Mat 1 and Reformer 1.

Reformer Training: Levels 1 and 2

Balanced Body Education offers a comprehensive Reformer training program designed for fitness professionals. This program consists of three courses:

  • Reformer Level 1 for the Fitness Professional: This course explores the movement potential of the Reformer and teaches instructors how to safely utilize the Reformer in group settings. It provides the ‘why’ behind the ‘how’, empowering critical reasoning skills from the beginning of training. Students learn how to create dynamic group Reformer classes and how to cue the beginning and intermediate Pilates Reformer exercises.
  • Reformer Level 2 for the Fitness Professional: This course expands on Reformer movement with intermediate and advanced exercises appropriate and safe in the group environment. This course includes progressions, regressions, and more common modifications. It also explores programs for specific populations, including pre and post-natal clients, those with osteoporosis and lower back issues.

With each Reformer course offering, Reformer Level 1 and Reformer Level 2, students will be able to begin teaching as agreed upon by their club manager/champion and start working on the Reformer.

Educational Philosophy and Approach

Balanced Body Education respects the traditions of Joseph H. Pilates’ original works while also incorporating the best of contemporary research from exercise science to leading full-body movement theories. Balanced Body educational programs highlight movement principles that are universal to the way the body moves, strengthens and heals. These principles incorporate the most up-to-date biomechanical theories of movement and exercise science. Understanding these principles in relation to the program of study creates a dynamic learning experience which can be immediately incorporated into practice.

The curriculum, created by Nora St. John, has been taught since 2006. Balanced Body prides itself on providing its students with the educational tools to help them teach and grow as practitioners, encouraging each of them to find their voice, rhythm, and style.

Certification and Recognition

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, students will receive a certificate of completion from their club or organization powered by Balanced Body. The coursework presented in the Pilates Reformer for the Fitness Professional maps directly with Balanced Body's internationally recognized certification program. All of the coursework will count toward the full certification, and to complete the full certification program, students will need to complete additional requirements.

To complete the program of choice there is a test out which consists of a practical and a written examination. Depending on the course of study, the practical examination requires each student to be responsible to demonstrate competence in class design, appropriateness of exercise choices, exercise progressions and regressions as well as equipment setup, safety and appropriateness. The written examination consists of multiple choice, fill in the blank and essays.

National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP)

The Balanced Body Pilates certification will allow students to sit for the National Pilates Certification Program exam. As a third-party testing organization, NPCP certification is an industry standard that indicates the instructor has met a high standard of excellence.

Balanced Body Test Out

A Balanced Body Test Out is the final step in achieving full certification for a chosen Pilates program. Whether completing Mat, Reformer, Mat & Reformer, or Comprehensive training, the Test Out verifies knowledge and teaching ability.

The Test Out includes:

  • 1-hour Written Exam to assess understanding of Pilates principles, exercises, anatomy, and Joseph Pilates history.
  • 1-hour Practical Exam to demonstrate the ability to teach a session effectively. The test out exercises to be taught will be pre-assigned.
