Auburn University Medical Clinic: Comprehensive Healthcare for the Auburn Community

The Auburn University Medical Clinic (AUMC) is committed to providing high-quality, efficient, and convenient healthcare with compassion, dedication, and professionalism. Serving as one of the premier college health centers in the country, AUMC offers a wide range of medical services to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and members of the surrounding Auburn University community.

Comprehensive Medical Services

The Auburn University Medical Clinic provides a full range of primary, preventative, and urgent medical care services. Care is delivered by a team of fully licensed and board-certified/eligible physicians, certified/registered nurse practitioners, certified physician assistants, and supporting staff. These healthcare providers have access to a wide range of specialists and emergency services when necessary, ensuring patients receive the appropriate level of care.

The clinic's medical staff offers comprehensive health care, similar to that provided at any other primary care or urgent care clinic. Their team of providers is experienced in treating common medical problems, including minor surgery, suturing of lacerations, and removal of ingrown toenails. The clinic is also equipped to treat patients with intravenous fluids and medications, including antibiotics when medically appropriate, often hastening recovery and avoiding hospital stays.

Specific services include:

  • Primary Care: General medical care for various health concerns.
  • Preventive Care: Services aimed at maintaining health and preventing illness.
  • Urgent Care: Treatment for illnesses and injuries requiring prompt attention but not life-threatening.
  • Minor Surgery: Surgical procedures that can be performed in the clinic setting.
  • Suturing of Lacerations: Repair of skin wounds.
  • Removal of Ingrown Toenails: Treatment for painful ingrown toenails.
  • Intravenous Fluids and Medications: Administration of fluids and medications directly into the bloodstream.
  • Allergy Shots: If receiving immunotherapy, patients can receive allergy shots using the antigen supplied by their allergist, along with a copy of the injection instructions.
  • Vaccinations: AU Med Clinic offers numerous vaccinations, including MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Influenza, Tetanus, HPV, Shingles, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis Series (A & B), Meningitis, Rabies, & Polio. They also offer the Yellow Fever and Typhoid vaccine by appointment only.

Payment and Insurance

AUMC provides medical services on a fee-for-service basis, meaning patients (or their insurance provider) pay for medical services only when used. Payment is expected upon provision of service and may be made by cash, check, or card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover).

The clinic bills primary and secondary insurance companies when an assignment of benefits is received. It is advisable to check with your insurance carrier about the coverage and benefits provided by your specific plan. AUMC has contracts with all the major insurance carriers, including BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Tricare Standard, and various other PPO Networks.

TRICARE:

AUMC is a TRICARE-authorized provider. TRICARE Standard offers the most flexibility to TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries, allowing them to see any TRICARE-authorized provider. TRICARE Prime members should seek the advice of their Primary Care Manager (PCM) or Military Treatment Facility (MTF) before seeking medical attention at AUMC.

Student Health Insurance:

For those with high deductible plans or restrictive HMO coverage, the Student Government Association offers a Student Health Insurance policy to meet basic medical needs, including coverage for office visits to AUMC with the payment of a co-pay.

Appointments and Access

To minimize waiting time, patients are encouraged to call 334-844-4416 to speak with one of the care coordinators before coming to the clinic. They will assist in setting up an appointment at a convenient time with your provider of care. Patients can also request an appointment online through their FollowMyHealth patient portal.

Walk-ins are also accepted between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, with no appointment needed. Walk-in patients will be evaluated and given appointments or seen immediately based on the urgency of their condition.

Auburn University requires a Tuberculosis Skin Test or Tuberculosis Blood Test from every student in order to attend. The Auburn University Medical Clinic provides both the skin test and the blood test. The skin test is a $30.00 fee, not billed to insurance. It is due as soon as possible. The TB test cannot be past 6 months old from the first day of class. Follow the instructions provided by Med+Proctor.

To register upon admission to Auburn University, as well as traveling to some countries, you will be required to demonstrate protection against some communicable diseases [e.g., measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)]. This requires vaccination, physician certification of disease, or blood tests showing evidence of immunity. If you do not comply, you may have difficulty in registering or entering a foreign country.

Excuses for Illness

While the Auburn University Medical Clinic will write excuses for illness, you must be seen by one of their healthcare providers to be eligible for a class excuse. Even so, an excuse is not guaranteed; it will be at the discretion of the clinician whether an excuse is warranted.

Commitment to Quality

AUMC continuously strives to maintain a high level of quality care delivered in a modern, patient-friendly environment. This is why they perform ongoing quality studies to ensure they are objectively meeting certain standards. At the end of each visit, patients are asked to complete a Patient Satisfaction Survey, and feedback is encouraged every time their services are used. AUMC views patient feedback as a testament to their efforts and as an opportunity for improvement.

Data Security Incident

On September 23, 2024, AUMC was notified by their third-party vendor, Change Healthcare, that some of their patients' protected health information (PHI) was affected by a data security incident they experienced in February 2024. Change Healthcare is notifying patients on behalf of Auburn University Medical Clinic and is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protections for two years to anyone impacted.

Philosophy and Mission

The Auburn University Medical Clinic promotes the concept of individual "wellness" in contrast to a traditional status quo approach to holistic health. Their approach is to assist patients with opportunities to develop themselves in social, physical, intellectual, career, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of their lives.

AUMC's philosophy is to serve as a patient advocate, which obligates them to empower patients to better manage their health needs through education and skill development. They are prevention-oriented and seek to work with patients so that they can better understand their health care needs.

The ultimate measure of AUMC's success is the satisfaction of the customers for whom services are provided and the satisfaction of the Auburn University community.

State-of-the-Art Facility

In 2005, AUMC moved into its new state-of-the-art facility with 40 exam rooms, digitized x-rays, and cutting-edge lab equipment that rivals the best primary care clinics in the industry for efficiency and design.

Partnering with East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC)
