Understanding GPA Calculation at Appalachian State University

The grade-point average (GPA) serves as a key indicator of a student's academic performance throughout their time at Appalachian State University. It is a metric used to evaluate a student's overall achievement in their coursework. College can be a very stressful time for many students. On top of your GPA and normal course load, you also have jobs and internships to apply to. The short answer is yes, your Appalachian State University GPA will matter and impact your short-term career prospects. However, many jobs only require a minimum GPA for consideration.

How GPA is Calculated

The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of quality hours attempted. It's important to note that "quality points" and "quality hours" are derived from courses graded A-F or WF. GPAs are not rounded; instead, they are truncated to the hundredths place. For example, if a student earns 163.1 quality points across 41 quality hours, the resulting GPA would be 3.978, which is then truncated to 3.97. Grade Point Values

At the end of each grading period, grades are given in each course by letters which indicate the quality of work done by the student. Each letter grade corresponds to a specific number of grade points per semester hour:

  • A: Excellent, 4 grade points per semester hour.
  • A-: Excellent, 3.7 grade points per semester hour.
  • B+: Above average, 3.3 grade points per semester hour.
  • B: Above average, 3 grade points per semester hour.
  • B-: Above average, 2.7 grade points per semester hour.
  • C+: Average, 2.3 grade points per semester hour.
  • C: Average, 2 grade points per semester hour.
  • C-: Average, 1.7 grade points per semester hour.
  • D+: Below average but passing, 1.3 grade points per semester hour.
  • D: Below average but passing, 1 grade point per semester hour.
  • D-: Below average but passing, 0.7 grade point per semester hour.
  • F: Failure, 0 grade points.
  • P: Pass, 0 grade points (used only for courses taken on pass-fail basis).
  • F: Failure, 0 grade points (indicates only that the course was taken on the pass-fail basis; this grade is equivalent to the F above).
  • AU: Audit, no credit
  • I: Incomplete, because of sickness or some other unavoidable cause. An "I" becomes an "F" if not removed within the time designated by the instructor, not to exceed one semester, except that all incompletes must be removed at the time of graduation.

The chart below demonstrates how each letter grade corresponds to a certain grade point. Credit hours vary from class to class. For example, a normal class at Appalachian State University may be worth 4 credits, while a part-time class is worth 2 credits.

Chancellor's and Dean's Lists

Appalachian State University recognizes high-achieving students through the Chancellor's and Dean's Lists. Hometown information comes from the active, permanent address provided by the student. NC Newspapers use this hometown information to publish Chancellor's and Dean's Lists. Also, students who have chosen to have privacy restrictions will not appear on these lists.

Chancellor's List

The Chancellor's List was created to provide higher recognition to those full-time students who receive a grade-point average of 3.85 or higher in any semester. To qualify for the Chancellor's List, an undergraduate student must carry 12 hours or more of coursework on which grade points are computed and attain a grade-point average of 3.85 or better for that semester. Only those courses earning credit toward graduation will be used in determining eligibility for honors.

Dean's List

An undergraduate student who carries 12 - 14 hours of coursework on which grade points are computed and who attains a grade-point average of 3.45 or better is placed on the dean's list of honor students for that semester. An undergraduate student who carries 15 hours or more of coursework on which grade points are computed and who attains a grade-point average of 3.25 or better is placed on the dean's list of honor students for that semester. Only those courses earning credit toward graduation will be used in determining eligibility for honors.

Registration

Students who have been in attendance within a calendar year will be allowed to register. There may be a PIN required which can be obtained from your academic advisor. Any undergraduate or graduate student previously enrolled at Appalachian State, who has not been enrolled in classes for more than one calendar year or who left on academic suspension must apply for readmission to the university.

Initial access to the registration system is based on the student's classification and hours earned to date. Seniors and graduate students will be assigned the earliest access times. Non-degree seeking students may participate in early registration for Summer terms. Initial access to the registration system will be available towards the end of the early registration period. Students are not excused from class in order to register at the time their registration window opens.

Enrollment Status

An undergraduate student must take 12 semester hours during a regular semester in order to be classified as full-time. A graduate student must take 9 semester hours during a regular semester in order to be classified as full-time.

Tuition Surcharge

The tuition surcharge is applied to students exceeding a certain number of attempted credit hours. The surcharge is assessed in the fall and spring semesters, but not during the summer semester. A student becomes subject to the surcharge during the first fall or spring semester where his or her attempted hours (including in-progress hours for that semester) exceed the surcharge threshold. The student will continue to receive a surcharge for surcharge-applicable hours taken during subsequent fall or spring semesters. The charge will be applied to the student's account about 8 weeks into the semester in which they are charged.

Surcharge Applicability

For students earning a first baccalaureate degree in a program that requires no more than 128 credit hours, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours in excess of 140. For students earning a first baccalaureate degree in a UNC Board of Governors Board-approved program that requires more than 128 credit hours, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours that exceed 110 percent of the credit hours required for the degree. Such programs include those that have been officially designated by the Board of Governors as five-year programs as well as those involving double majors, or combined bachelor's/master's degrees. For students earning a baccalaureate degree other than their first, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours that exceed 110 percent of the minimum additional credit hours needed to earn the additional baccalaureate degree.

Surcharge-applicable hours are all attempted hours from App State, including courses in-progress for the current term, failed courses, repeated courses, and course withdrawals. In addition, any hours accepted for transfer from outside of App State and added to a student's App State academic record since August 15, 2013 are surcharge-applicable, unless those credits happen to be from one of several excluded categories. Students should understand that changing their major could result in excess attempted hours that will count toward the tuition surcharge threshold of 140 attempted hours.

Dropping Classes and Refunds

If you drop a class before or during the Drop/Add period that changes the tuition and fees hour bracket, you will get a refund for the difference in the sum of tuition and fees for your residency classification. For example, if you drop before or during the Drop/Add period and your enrolled hours changes from 12 to 9 hours, you will receive the 100% of the difference between the 12+ hour tuition and fees and 9-11 hours tuition and fees. The Drop/Add period for a fall or spring term is the first five days of classes. If you drop a class after the Drop/Add period, you will not receive a refund. If you drop all of your classes, it is considered a withdrawal, and the refund is based on the date of withdrawal.

Students who have already declared a major but want to change to a major in a different degree-granting college should go to the dean's office of the college where the new major is located to complete a change of major form.
