Mystery in Punta Cana: The Disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki
The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, during a spring break trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has sparked widespread concern and investigation. Konanki vanished early on March 6, prompting a search and raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
The Timeline of Events
Konanki, along with five friends, traveled to Punta Cana on March 3 for a spring break vacation. According to police reports, she disappeared from a beach near her hotel before dawn on March 6. The Loudoun County, Virginia, Sheriff's office confirmed that Konanki and one of her traveling companions were residents of Loudoun County.
Security camera footage showed Konanki walking on the beach outside the RIU Republica Resort on March 6 with two men and three women. She was seen holding onto a blonde man, identified by authorities as a "male friend." This man became a focus of the investigation.
Joshua Riibe and the Investigation
Joshua Steven Riibe, a 22-year-old St. Cloud University senior from Iowa, emerged as a key figure in the investigation. Riibe admitted to drinking with Konanki on the beach the night of her disappearance. According to a transcript of his interview with prosecutors, they were kissing in the ocean when they were caught in a current. Riibe, who claimed to be a former lifeguard, said he helped her get back to shore.
Riibe stated that after reaching the beach, he vomited, and Konanki said she was going to get her things. He claimed that was the last time he saw her and expressed surprise upon learning of her disappearance.

Dominican police detained Riibe for questioning. However, Judge Edwin Rijo of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of La Altagracia ordered Riibe's release, citing unlawful detention that exceeded the 48-hour limit permitted by the Dominican Constitution and the Dominican Code of Criminal Procedure. The ruling, announced on March 17, was immediately valid and enforceable.
Following the March 17 ruling, Riibe was released from police supervision, and his passport was returned. He returned to the United States on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after, he said, authorities forced him to stay in the Caribbean nation and confiscated his passport. NBC News witnessed Riibe at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, where he boarded a plane.
Legal Proceedings and Due Process
Judge Rijo issued a written judgment explaining his decision to grant the habeas corpus motion filed by Guzmán Ariza on behalf of Riibe. The detailed judgment, presented on Friday, March 28, reinforced the original ruling.
Guzmán Ariza emphasized their commitment to due process and constitutional guarantees, stating, "Our firm remains committed to upholding due process and the constitutional guarantees established under Article 69 of our Constitution. This ruling reinforces these fundamental principles and strengthens confidence in the justice system of the Dominican Republic."
The Search and Possible Drowning
Konanki's clothes were found on a portable beach bed near where she went missing. A man who stayed behind with Konanki on the beach told police that they went for a swim and were caught by a large wave. He claimed that after returning to the beach, he vomited and fell asleep on a beach bed.

Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not named any suspects. The Dominican National Police stated that they are "re-interviewing targeted individuals who were in the victim’s proximity at the time of her disappearance," including hotel employees, to gather information about her movements and interactions.
Konanki's parents have expressed their belief that their daughter has drowned. "We are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned," her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, said. "This is incredibly difficult for us to process." They have called on local police to declare their daughter dead.
A spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office stated that while they have heard reports of possible drowning, they have not seen any evidence presented to support this theory.
