Internship Opportunities at AEI
AEI offers more than 40 internship opportunities across its research and business groups. These internships allow students to learn directly from some of America's most renowned scholars and nonprofit leaders who are advancing the conversation on today's prominent public policy issues.
Education Department Internships
Within the Education Department, internships offer exposure to both K-12 and higher education policy. Interns can assist resident scholars with ongoing responsibilities associated with AEI's Center on Higher Education Reform and Education Program. These responsibilities include research and editing, event planning, and administrative tasks.
Specific Research Areas
Interns may have the opportunity to contribute to projects under the guidance of resident scholars such as Jason D. Delisle and Frederick Hess. Delisle's research focuses on higher education financing, particularly related to federal student aid policies, including student loans repayment, default rates, and Pell Grants. Hess conducts research on school leadership, teacher quality, education politics, and related school reform issues. Current projects include K-12 school leadership, educational entrepreneurship, the next generation of teacher evaluation, and digital learning.

Responsibilities and Required Skills
An intern in the education department will assist with ongoing responsibilities associated with AEI's Center on Higher Education Reform, including short-term projects and long-term background research for reports. The intern will working with federal education datasets and will perform proof-reading and administrative duties as needed. Interns may be involved in working with federal education datasets, performing proof-reading, and handling administrative duties as needed. The ideal candidate will have strong research abilities, attention to detail, an interest in K-12 and higher education policy, curiosity and willingness to learn and explore the world of education policy, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to multi-task and learn and adapt to a multitude of tasks, projects and research topics.
Eligibility and Application Process
Competitive candidates for these internships will generally possess a 3.4 GPA from a top ranking college or university.
Application Deadline
Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until late November. It is advisable to apply early in the application window.
Need-Based Scholarship Program
In the summer of 2020, AEI offered up to six intern candidates a $1,000 monthly living stipend as part of a new need-based scholarship program. The aim of this scholarship is to enable students who require financial assistance to benefit from the academic, professional, and personal advantages of interning at AEI.
