In 1978, the institution became independent, known as the Australasian College of Herbal Studies, as it separated from the South Pacific College during its accreditation process. Today, ACHS remains one of the few accredited colleges specializing in online holistic health education, offering undergraduate and graduate certificate, diploma, and degree programs and professional continuing education.
The college continued to grow, expanding its programs and offering courses in aromatherapy and herbal medicine. In 1991, it opened an office in the USA and by 1995, it was operating independently from the New Zealand school. to offer distance education programs in holistic medicine.
In 2002, ACHS relocated from Lake Oswego to its current campus in SW Portland, Oregon. The campus features a botanical teaching garden, the Apothecary Shoppe College Store, and custom-designed classroom and administrative offices. The following year, the college was accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission and changed its name from the Australasian College of Herbal Studies to the Australasian College of Health Sciences.
In 2009, the college underwent another name change, becoming the American College of Healthcare Sciences.
