Bluffton Middle School, coached by Nephi Peralta, earned second place, while St. secured third place.
Perry High School students are actively engaged in hands-on learning experiences. Ann Bassett's biology class has been immersed in the study of hydroponics, cultivating tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and spinach in the school's greenhouse.
Recognizing Outstanding Educators
The Allen County Educational Service Center (ESC) is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Laura Jackson, a teacher for the Pathway To Success Program at the Allen County Educational Service Center, received a nomination for the National Life Group’s LifeChanger of the Year award. An anonymous nomination recognized Coil's exceptional dedication to creating an inclusive, equitable, and joyful classroom environment. The National Life Group will award significant cash prizes to the top winner and their school district, as well as smaller prizes to finalists and LifeChanger award winners. The group recognizes K-12 teachers who positively impact students' lives, improve district culture and leadership, and demonstrate moral and ethical standards. Coil's nomination highlights her commitment to meeting each student's unique academic, social, and emotional needs, while celebrating their strengths and backgrounds. She focuses on interactive lessons, multiple modes of learning, and building genuine relationships with her students.
Dana Shardy was selected as the regional winner of the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award! This award recognizes educators who have made extraordinary contributions to the education of students with disabilities.

Furthermore, the Allen County ESC has once again received the High Performing ESC designation from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce, highlighting its commitment to excellence in education.
Addressing Funding Challenges and Advocating for Fair Solutions
The superintendents and treasurers of Allen County schools have voiced their concerns regarding the state's approach to funding education. They emphasize that Ohio has shifted the burden of funding education from the state to local property taxpayers. Over the past two decades, state lawmakers have made decisions that have fundamentally changed how Ohio funds education.
The data reveals a concerning trend:
- In 2002, Ohio ranked 35th nationally in state funding for K-12 education.
- By 2023, Ohio had fallen to 45th in the nation.
- Ohio's state share of education funding has decreased from 44.8% to 33.5%, which is 11.2 percentage points below the national average.
- Local property tax burden has increased from 49.5% to 53.1% of education funding.
While the national average shows states funding approximately 45% of education costs, Ohio now funds only 33.5%, leaving local communities to cover the difference. Ohio ranks 20th nationally in per-pupil spending but relies heavily on local property taxes to fund education.
The superintendents and treasurers caution against measures that would drastically reduce or eliminate property taxes, as these taxes fund essential community services such as schools, fire and emergency services, local roads and infrastructure, and community services. They advocate for real solutions that involve the state of Ohio fulfilling its responsibility to fund public education adequately. They propose targeted relief for those who need it most, sustainable growth protections, and local control and transparency. They call for state legislators to be partners in finding solutions and demand that Ohio provide adequate state funding for education while pursuing meaningful property tax relief.

Understanding State Testing
