Historical Overview
Allegany College of Maryland began operations in 1961 as "Allegany Community College". Initially, the college was housed in the all-black Carver Community School, which had been closed in 1959 by the Allegany County Board of Education following the integration of public schools in 1955, during a segregationist era. The college opened with an enrollment of 102 students from Allegany County under the direction of ACM's first president, Robert S. In 1969, the college moved to a new campus consisting of six buildings on a 316-acre (1.3 km2) tract in suburban Cumberland that was partially funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission. Since that time, the campus has expanded to include 15 buildings, which provide modern facilities for both credit and non-credit students.
Accreditation and Governance
The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) oversees and coordinates higher education in the State of Maryland including academic and financial policies at the college. Allegany College of Maryland is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, ensuring that it meets rigorous standards of quality and effectiveness. The college is also approved for operation by MHEC. An eight-member board of trustees, appointed by the Governor of the State of Maryland, governs the college. The college is a member of the Maryland Association of Community Colleges (MACC).

The college offers 31 associate degree programs, 30 certificate programs, and 10 letter of recognition programs. Athletics
Allegany College of Maryland is known for its successful athletic programs. The college's men's baseball and basketball teams have been consistently ranked in the top 20 of their respective National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Divisions. Women's basketball participated in the NJCAA National Tournament four times - 1986, 1993 (2nd), 2009 and 2011.
