To be eligible for the African Union Internship Program, applicants must meet specific criteria and fulfill certain requirements:
- Nationality: Be a national of an African country.

- Areas of Work: African Union work areas, including Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy & Sustainable Environment (ARBE), Economic Development, Health, Peace & Security, Women/Gender/Youth, ICT, and many more.
- Number of positions: Approximately 50.
- Duration: Internships run for 3 months, renewable once, for a maximum of 6 months.
- Target group: Open to nationals of African countries.
- Full-time engagement: The AU internship program is a full-time engagement.
Terms and Conditions
Applicants should be aware of the terms and conditions governing the African Union Internship Program:

- Financial Responsibility: The AU will have no financial obligation towards interns. Travel arrangements, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns. The AU does not provide financial support for travel, accommodation or living costs; interns are responsible for their expenses.
- Visa Assistance: The AU will use reasonable efforts to assist interns in obtaining their entry and residence visas. The African Union does not sponsor visas for internships.
- No Compensation for Travel: Interns will not be entitled to any compensation for travel.
- Internship Duration: The internship will be authorized only once for three (3) months renewable one time for any candidate. For the internship to be worthwhile and effective, interns will be accepted for a minimum of 3 months, with the possibility of extension for another 3 months depending the applicant’s performance and the willingness of the host Department/Division/Unit. The minimum duration of an internship is 3 months and ideally should be uninterrupted.
- Medical Coverage: Interns are not entitled to medical travel or medical evacuation to and from the internship location at the expense of the Commission. Interns are required to have adequate medical insurance before the start of the internship. The African Union will not be responsible for any costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship. An intern is not expected to work if he/she is unwell but it is important that the supervisor be informed of any absences. Any expense relating to illness is the responsibility of the intern.
- Confidentiality: If selected, interns will be required to exercise utmost discretion and confidentiality on information that they will collect or be exposed to at the African Union.
- Authority: Although not considered a staff member of the African Union, if selected, interns will be subject to the authority of the Head of the Mission and the authority delegated by him/her to Officers.

- Documents: Upload all required documents, including a recommendation letter from the educational institution and the mandatory AU CV template. Use the specified template. Only applications that include all the required documents will be considered. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.
- Monitoring: You can monitor the progress of your application status through the AU career portal.
- Inquiries: Due to the high volume of online applications, it is not possible to discuss your internship application status by telephone. Be specific by telling us exactly what issue you have encountered.
Important Considerations
- Unpaid Internship: This is an unpaid internship, hence, you are advised to make your own financial arrangements to cover your living expenses. AU does not provide any financial support or cover any costs for living expenses during the assignment for interns. Note: the AU does not provide financial support for travel, accommodation or living costs; interns are responsible for their expenses.
- Deadline: The deadline to submit applications for this internship program is December 31, 2025.
