The Student Council consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Reporter, as well as classroom representatives. Each elected officer serves a one-year term.

With the guidance of their faculty advisors, the Student Council members act as the student governing body and are instrumental in bridging the gap between the staff and the student body. The duties of the council members include school or community announcements, representing NAMS in a positive way, and delegating duties to classroom representatives. Each morning, Student Council officers and/or representatives lead the student body in the “Pledge of Allegiance” from the office before the school day begins. National Junior Honor Society: Recognizing Excellence and Fostering Service

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a student at New Albany Middle School. The National Junior Honor Society strives to recognize the total student. Candidates for membership in the National Junior Honor Society must have a 3.5 grade point average and participate in two or more community or school activities. Additionally, students must show active participation in three or more service projects in the school or community, and demonstrate the highest qualities of character, measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty.

Seventh and eighth-grade members of the National Junior Honor Society conduct service projects each year. The organization sponsors annual food drives and works diligently soliciting funds to aid the victims of natural disasters. Other fundraisers in which students have participated are Relay for Life (American Cancer Society), Math Counts (St. Jude Research Hospital), and collecting money and items for needy children within our school family. This commitment to service reinforces the importance of giving back to the community and helping those in need.

New Albany Middle School students have several opportunities each year to compete in academic competitions. Seventh and eighth-grade students participate each year in the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics district math tournament. Tests are administered at NAMS to determine which students will proceed to the district tournament held at Northeast Community College.

Academic competitions are also available in the form of Geography and Spelling Bees. School-level competitions are held each year to determine which students will represent NAMS at the district, state, and national levels. A NAMS student has participated in the Geography Bee at the state level each year. These competitions provide a platform for students to showcase their talents, challenge themselves academically, and develop a passion for learning.

The New Albany Middle School Band Program consists of three bands: sixth grade, seventh grade, and eighth grade. Members of the band from each grade level participate in the New Albany Christmas Parade and in Christmas and Spring Concerts. The seventh and eighth-grade bands attend concert evaluations as well as solo and ensemble competitions at Itawamba Community College, where they consistently receive superior ratings.

The NAMS PTO sponsors the annual NAMS Beauty Review. Girls in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade can participate in the competition. Three to five Beauties are selected from the students who participate in the beauty review depending on the number of entries.
